Com Truise answers our questions and supplies us with two tracks - free to download. Big things happening for this man, look out for another feature from him soon.
How did you get started making music?
Haha, I used to dub toy keyboards and makeshift percussion over The Chemical Brothers. I think around 2001 I started to really explore "bedroom" production. Starting with drum and bass, quickly switching to down-tempo/Ambient then to electro then abstract/wonky beats. Com Truise is a fairly new moniker, I've only been experimenting with this style/sound for about 8 months.
How do you go about putting together a track, what sort of setup do you use - and has your approach changed over time?
I have a few different methods, they're mostly to get the overall "Com Truise" sound. I never start a track the same way, thats whats fun for me, I still get the end result I want, but the whole time its a new adventure. I have a small but growing collection of analog gear, synths, tape-machines. I think my thought process has stayed the same but the way I work is always changing, I like to stay busy, keep up on new techniques, so you could say my approach is constantly evolving.
There's a real mix of sounds to your music, how would you best describe it?
A bit nostalgic, a mish-mosh of various forms of electronic music. I'm rather obsessed of late with the 1980's, I draw a lot my inspiration from that period of time. I get the chillwave label, a lot. I guess some of my music fits in the "chillwave" genre but a lot of it doesn't at the same time.
Does living in Jersey provide any particular inspiration for you?
Hot summers, long nights, the shore. It makes me long for home. I think I'm most inspired by the thought of my family, my childhood, summers at the ocean, haha.
What are you listening to at the moment, who are your main inspirations and which albums released this year do you rate?
At this exact moment? Cocteau Twins - Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops, preceded by Polyrock - Romantic Me. I've been listening to a lot of italo, new wave, library, post-punk stuff lately. I think my main inspirations are Joy Division/New Order, Andy Clark and Boards of Canada. This year, well I really enjoyed the Onra - Long Distance LP, epic album.
What's next for you?
I'm currently working on a few ep's, remixes, and a full length. Expect some big things, and some freebies along the way!
