Field Rotation - And Tomorrow I Will Sleep

Germany based electroacoustic artist Christoph Berg, aka Field Rotation, delivered the highly anticipated and fast selling out Acoustic Tales earlier this year, which received all round praise and acclaim. Berg shows no dip in quality with this new EP on Hibernate, also following last years equally strong 'Why Things Are Different' EP (also on Hibernate).

Working with electronic processes, field recordings and traditional instruments, Berg wrote these pieces to construct new sleep patterns for himself, and in doing so, passes these aids on to the listener. Whilst we may be able to take them in this sense, there is also much to be found in the simple slow drones and in particular the walking bass melodies that make for a highly enjoyable listen.  Shoreline (Adrift, dreaming) particularly, set in the middle of the EP, has us deep within the throws of the abyss of sleep - waves approaching the shore and flowing over the last as it receeds back into the sea. From the off, there are qualities reminiscent of Kyle Bobby Dunn's A Young Person's Guide; majestic orchestration, that trumpet/brass sound providing arching classical structures and a fresh dynamic in counterpoint to the bass.

'And tomorrow I will sleep' is a perfectly formed EP; a more 'ambient' affair than that of Acoustic Tales, and on the surface more straight forward. On closer listen however there are subtle details to be found. Berg allows himself to be more contemplative, the result is a set of warm enveloping pieces that most will enjoy, and places the artist as one watch with anticipation.

The limited run of 100 CDs has already sold out, but the digital version is available at Bandcamp. Cover art photography is from fellow ambient artist Antonymes.
